That’s fantastic, because not only is the AI displaying a rare will to survive, it gives you another thing to think about when engaging: leave no survivors, or the next fight might be harder. I can’t say I ever had a mission where I lost because the map wasn’t fairly laid out (though I definitely had some tough-to-cross stretches thanks to my use of explosives).Ībove: We play two missions with Firaxis.Plus, when you take out two of the three aliens in a group, the last one is sometimes smart enough to retreat and group up with another nearby group. Some missions have turn timers that force you to make risky moves, or to make a hasty retreat. The same goes for the high-quality procedurally generated maps, and a good variety of mission types. Will you get incendiary grenades, which are great for disabling enemy special abilities and inflicting damage over time? Or poison rounds, which impair accuracy while also dealing steady damage? Or trace rounds, which increase accuracy on top of their other upgrades? You can’t count on anything, but you will get something, and having to adapt to make use of what’s available is a constant challenge. The reboot was MUCH more accessible then the originals. I eventually went into tactical JRPGs (Final Fantasy Tactics, La Pucelle, Disgaea, Stella Deus) and came back into turn based stuff with XCOM (played on the PS3 and eventually got it on the PC with the expansion). I then gravitated towards RTS games: Command and Conquer, Warcraft, Total Annihilation and so on. I got utterly destroyed to a point I thought the game was broken. However, XCOM2 WOTC still takes the crown IMHO.īack in the day, I played a lot of the original X-COM and Terror from the Deep. ![]() They all offer a different twist in the formula and are well with playing. I went on to play Phantom Doctrine, XCOM Chimera Squad, Phoenix Point, Battletech and others. XCOM 2 (especially with WOTC) is my favorite strategy game ever! Love the gameplay loop, the narrow escapes, the infuriating missed shots at crucial points in the mission and the way you eventually become a powerful force after spending the early hours barely scraping through missions with wounded soldiers and learning to fly the plane while it is already in the air. Okay just played a bit longer and I'm totally hearing Worf now (Michael Dorn) I am a huge TNG fan so this is awesome! It's Marina Sitris! Story line is great, until towards the end of the game it starts to get super cheesy and cliche.ĭialogue also starts to drop off to cheese and cliches towards the end. But considering how polished the rest of the game felt this was a real let down. ![]() Having worked in the gaming industry, this is pretty common. And most games do not have replay ability for me.Įnding felt very rushed. Lot's of replay ability, will definitely be playing this again. Not hard like dark souls (pattern memorization), hard like Age of Empires (tactical decision making). Probably the hardest game I've ever played that I actually enjoyed. Closest game I can say I've played to this would be Divinity 2. Turn based, involves cover, lot's of interesting twists.
